Umai! : Baumkuchen

Okay, so baumkuchen is German, not Asian - but it is extremely popular in Japan, so why not?
Baumkuchen is a layered log cake, cut into a circle - isn't it pretty? It's made on some sort of rotisserie type device, each batter layer being brushed on and cooked before the next.
The rings are so pretty!
The Japanese version we buy tastes as if spongecake was flattened out and rolled into a wheel.  It's delicious, especially paired with some tea or coffee.

And it really is popular in Japan.  Here's an episode of Yumeiro Patissiere dedicated to the baumkuchen! (Baumkuchen baking starts at about 2:25)

According to the anime, you can also make it in a square frying pan with some aluminum foil too (at 14:30), the directions are all in there, haha!

    I need to try this. I usually go for castella.

    Lol, that anime made me gave me sweets cravings. I've been meaning to try make the cake out of crepe layers and cream, from episode 1 or 2.

    Yum! I love your dessert posts ... There is an Austrian restaurant new in town. I wonder if they have this dessert on the menu?

    I have actually never tried this type of cake even though it's very popular - I'm not one for sponge cake.

    Hi, do you live in the San Mateo/San Francisco area? (NOT trying to be a stalker, but I lived two blocks away from Clement for 10 years, and I couldn't help but notice your pictures.)

    Where did you buy the baumkuchen? :D It's my auntie's birthday soon and I'd like to buy one of these for her.

      Hello! I live in san mateo - though I woudnt mind being a couple blocks from clement..haha! We found the baumkuchen at nijiya market (in san mateo one but its probably at the sf japantown too..or any other japanese market I would guess.) They also had choco covered ones at cost plus world market during christmas time...but it was really dry and not the greatest.

      good luck finding one for your aunt!
