Comfort Food: Mom's Style

Some days are just comfort food days. And comfort food usually comes from one's childhood, right? My mother can't really cook. Yet, the foods she'd make us kids will always count as comfort food to me! My brother and I spent some time remembering a few of our favorite childhood mom-dishes listed below.  Happy birthday to our favorite "costco cook"!

  • Lap cheong rice. Chinese sausage cut up and placed in with the rice cooker while it cookes. Most delicious - we'd always try to just eat the sausage though!
  • Sourdough bread and brie. I remember we'd always get the fresh baked baguettes and eat the warm, soft middle like mice on the way home!
  • Teriyaki sauce baked chicken thighs/drumsticks. The crispy skin is always the best. Yoshida sauce, I think?
  • Tuna fish and apple sandwiches. Little bits of apples cut up and mixed in with the tuna. So refreshing! (A close second was mac & cheese & a bag of frozen peas cooked in, yum!)

  • Popcorn and hot chocolate during movie nights. Hot chocolate including both marshmellows AND whip cream. So spoiled, we were (and still are)!
  • Lo han chai on rice. I survived on this in college, too!

  • Chicken hearts microwaved in soy sauce.  This one's a little bizarre, I suppose, but there's nothing like standing around the microwave hoping the gizzards won't blow up and make a mess.
  • Mom's famous chinese chicken salad. With packs of dried top ramen for crunch!
Even without being a gourmet chef, Penga-Mom did an excellent job raising kids that love food and will eat just about anything. Anything except maybe pigs feet in black vinegar. Still can't do that one, sorry!

This is why I love reading your blog! You're too funny. One of my favorite mom comfort foods is mac & cheese, as well as tuna melts! I guess it's the kid friendly food that mom's love puts a special touch on!

  2. This is a cute post :) Asian moms make for the most unique "comfort food" experiences. Mine is ramen for lunch, sitting around a shabu shabu pot on a cold night, kabocha on the side of everything, and putting down newspaper all over the kitchen so the tempura oil doesn't splatter everywhere :)

    1. uh, it's like a can of different mushrooms and glutens ("mock duck") and vegetables. Microwave it and put it on top of rice! Sak is not a fan, but I love it :)

  4. Haha, I understand that. :) I'm really comfy with furikake and rice now though.

Sorry I didn't reply to your comment! I thought I did...then I looked at it today. Oops. >x) It was pleasant meeting you and I hope we can hang out sometime, preferably once I get my college mess sorted out, haha.

    Happy eating!

    1. Can't go wrong with furikake! I like the plain one, though the one with salmon bits is good too. Is it college application season already? How exciting! Hope you get your top choice!

    2. :S Furikake is one of my staple foods. :D And handrolls too. Oh, onigiri. Can't forget that. Haven't tried the salmon one yet though. I'll go to Nijiya sometime and check it out.

Yeah! I'm scrambling to complete my UC apps before the end of this week and my private before winter break starts! I hope I get to stay in the area too. :)

  5. This is a great post! The diet I try to follow is way off-base from what I grew up with, but I'll always have a soft spot for my mom's beef stew and egg salad sandwiches. There's no better food in the world, in my opinion. The rice/sausage bowl at the top looks really good.
