Umai! : Tofu Pie

New and totally not-diet-friendly Friday posts: Asian-ish desserts!

I know, terribly broad subject.  This is really just an excuse for me to eat sweets.  Bwahahaha!

Well, to be fair, today's tofu pie isn't all that bad for you, being that it's pretty much a tofu version of cheesecake. Sak's great grandmother used to own a tofu shop, so they have one of those super-secret-family-recipes. Unfortunately, Sak has not yet been trusted with the knowledge, so we'll be using a different recipe (from one of our cookbooks). It's nearly identical to this one I found online though, if you're interested.

First we made the lemon jello, allowing it to set to a "gravy-like consistency", whatever that is.  Gravy can be varying thicknesses, depending on the type, I think!
Next, mash the silky tofu!
And grate some lemon rind, reserving the lemon juice as well.
Mix it all together, along with some cool "hwip"!

Lastly, just stick it in a pie crust and chill in the fridge.

All done!
Mmm.

It's kinda like a mix between jello consistency and custard consistency.  I think maybe if I didn't use fat-free whip, it may have been a little richer in "oomph", but a light treat isn't so bad!  Just don't eat the whole pie in one sitting by yourself.  Tofu is loaded with protein, so expect a "meat" coma/stomachache if you go hog-wild!

Have you had tofu pie before?

Other Desserts:

Red Bean Mochi Soup
Hawaiian Bread Pudding
Mooncakes

  1. Yum, yum, yummie! I was shocked to learn that a lot of meat substitute products (soyrizo, soy burger crumbles, etc.) are actually pretty calorie-packed! Which is funny because we are all trained to think tofu = healthy. All in moderation, I guess. Your pie looks delish :)

  3. Ok, somehow you just made tofu look appealing to me! Usually I don't like it because I kind of think it's pointless when it tastes like nothing (and in the south, grits are basically the same, flavorless filler that you have to smother with something to have any taste). But this actually looks really good!

  4. I imagine that would be very filling!!!! I still can't get my head around tofu being in a dessert though, it's strictly a savory item in my world.

  5. Mmmmm.. I could eat tofu all day. Tofu steak, agedashi.. I don't really dig lemon flavored desserts, I wonder if I could make this with chocolate pudding? This looks delicious!

I also love your reference to hwip - I don't know if I've ever met anyone that says it like that?

P.S. I really don't think the Heelys thing is gonna happen for Dave, he's too scared to lean back and roll :(
