I put my taiyaki mold on our gas stove, sprayed it with a bit of PAM, and warmed it up.
We tried three different "innards" with whatever we had around the house.
First - peanut butter. Batter, peanut butter and more batter on top.
Close and cook a few minutes on each side until brownish.
So cute!
But really, no. Melted peanut butter is nasty. Never again.
Second, we used a 78% cocao bar lying around. Sak is a bitter-choco man only, so that's all we ever have.
It tasted good, but there was no sugar in either the choco or the pancake batter, so I had to dip it in fake maple syrup to make it tastier. I think milk choco would be perfect though.
And finally, I put some maple syrup directly in the fish.
Which was weird, because it cooked into the batter instead of staying liquid in a pocket. Gave the taiyaki a nice, subtle maple flavor though.
Bottom line - I need to find better fillers. What's lying around your house I could try?
Have you tried a jelly? I feel like jelly or apple butter might be tasty.
ReplyDeleteOr fruit. I love fruit on pancakes (strawberries, blueberries, and bananas) so they might be good inside too! My favorites are "Chunky Monkey" pancackes - semi-sweet chocolate chips and banana chunks!
You might like a filling of dulce de leche (essentially caramel). Most grocery stores should have it, probably on one of the ethnic/specialty aisles. I eat it with a spoon out of the jar sometimes...
ReplyDeleteAlso: cream cheese? Mix some ratio of cream cheese with powdered sugar until smooth, then use as a filling? Also second the berries/fruit recommendation.

I love bitter-choco too! But yah, not enough sugar to make all that dough tasty too. I think the maple would be good if you put something else in the middle too.
So. I just had a some Dunkin Donuts maple sausage bites. Which are basically mini corndogs. :-P So maybe you can brush some maple on the pancake mix part and then put some MEAT in it. Since you guys seem to like meat from the other post I just read. :-P But this might be breaking some tayaki rules.

YUM! Where did you get those pancake cooker things? They're awesome...What about raspberry or strawberry jam? Or canned peaches/pineapples?? It all sounds good to me!
